Opening of the exhibition “What Do Mari Patterns Tell?”

On September 17 at 16:30, the exhibition of Mari artist Zhanna Tokhti, “What Do Mari Patterns Tell?”, will open at Salme Cultural Centre (Salme St. 12).

The series of paintings “What Do Mari Patterns Tell?” (2021) is dedicated to Mari traditional culture. The conceptual basis of the exhibition lies in Mari folk costume ornaments and embroidery. In order to understand the symbolic language of embroidery, the artist decided to study it in depth and explain it to others through her works.
From ritual patterns, new compositions have been created to tell a story in a slightly different form than the symmetrical designs on clothing. Technically, the works combine the clear structure of embroidery with the fluidity of watercolour. The observations presented about Mari beliefs and customs may also help other peoples, especially Finno-Ugric ones, to engage in a dialogue in the language of patterns – a deeper way of getting to know one another, discovering and interpreting symbols within their own cultures, and broadening their worldview.

Come and discover Mari culture through the secret language of patterns!
The exhibition will remain open until October 17.

The exhibition is supported by the Estonian Nationalities Union and the City of Tallinn.
